What is a microdermabrasion treatment?
A microdermabrasion facial is a simple, safe and effective form of superficial exfoliation that helps increase the skin’s cell turnover rate, resulting in a softer, brighter and clearer looking complexion. With AZURE’s microdermabrasion treatment, tiny crystals are used to gently remove the outer dead layer of the skin. This refines the texture and color of your skin, can help minimize fine lines and clean out pores
What is the difference between crystal and crystal-free microdermabrasion treatments?
Crystal microdermabrasion systems are the traditional treatment of choice and rely on tiny crystals that are gently applied onto the skin to create the optimum exfoliating process. Crystal microdermabrasion techniques have been a reliable method of trained skincare professionals and dermatologists in the field of cosmeceuticals and skincare for decades, and continue to provide dependable results.
The original crystal microdermabrasion is a superficially ABLATIVE procedure that removes the outer surface of the skin by means of force or friction. Crystal microdermabrasion treatments involve the use of a hand-held device that propels a high-speed flow of aluminum oxide crystals that are “blasted” out onto the skin. At the same time, the machine’s vacuum system sucks away dirt, dead cells and used crystals.
Crystal-free or “diamond-tip” microdermabrasion treatments have recently hit the skin rejuvenation market, and this is classified as an ABRASIVE procedure that will remove the outer surface of the skin by means of scratching, grating or sanding. Diamond microdermabrasion treatments are completed by the use of a diamond tipped wand that is then used to “scratch or sand” away the top level of the skin, while the machine’s vacuum system draws away dirt, debris and dead cells.
Our clinic proudly uses the traditional crystal microdermabrasion method of exfoliation in order to provide a deeper and more aggressive result that the crystal-free method. Since there are no crystals to fit the exact irregularities of the skin with the crystal-free method, this technique of microdermabrasion is not as effective on uneven surfaces. AZURE’s crystal microdermabrasion ensures that all the irregular surfaces of the skin are exfoliated evenly and with minimal discomfort. Aluminum Oxide crystals have been the most commonly used abrasive or ablative agent since the introduction of the microdermabrasion treatment. Aluminum Oxide is the second hardest mineral, after diamonds. The irregular crystal shape makes them a more effective exfoliant. Aluminum Oxide is also an inert material which causes no allergic or adverse reactions, and it is completely safe since it is non-toxic of accidentally ingested and is non-carcinogenic.
What is dermal infusion?
Microdermabrasion primes the skin to allow our advanced skin care products enter the deeper layers of the skin, and dermal infusion is the technique of immediately following your treatment with the topical application of SkinCeuticals amazing serums. Is microdermabrasion with dermal infusion right for me?
Microdermabrasion is absolutely safe for everyone, regardless of age, skin type and skin tone. This treatment addresses common concerns such as aging, congestion, dryness/flaky skin, blemishes, dullness and blotchiness. The most common areas that are treated with microdermabrasion include the face and neck, but microdermabrasion could be used to address issues on other parts of the body if necessary. Although this facial is safe for all skin types and most concerns, microdermabrasion is not the treatment of choice for active cystic acne, since it is possible to spread the acne causing bacteria which could result in more breakouts. For cystic acne, chemical peels that use salicylic acne, AZURE’s Fractora Advanced RF Micro-Needling, Intense Pulse Light (IPL) and PhotoDynamic Therapy (PDT) are very effective options.
Microdermabrasion is one of the few treatments that is also safe for pregnant and breast-feeding mothers, as well as sensitized skin.
How does the skin benefit from Microdermabrasion?
Approximately every 28 days, the skin creates a new layer of cells. As these new cells form, they push their way to the surface which can cause dead, damaged or old skin cells to settle on the surface. This process can cause enlarged pores, clogged pores, a bumpy uneven texture, and a dull appearance. As the skin ages this process slows down leading to the appearance of older skin with less radiance. A microdermabrasion can help speed up the natural cell turnover rate to result in skin that looks refreshed.
How many treatments will I need?
This treatment is meant to be progressive not aggressive, and as with most rejuvenation type procedures, better results can be ween with a series of treatments. After one session, the skin will appear fresher, cleaner, smoother and softer, and even better results can be seen after a series of at least three.
What can I expect at my first treatment?
An esthetician will discuss the microdermabrasion in a personalized skincare consultation prior to your treatment, and often this can be performed right before your treatment begins. A microdermabrasion treatment typically takes 45 minutes. After your consultation and paperwork, your esthetician will bring you into a private room and cleanse and tone the area that is going to be treated. This ensures the skin is clean and the PH balance is restored. After this step, the microdermabrasion begins. The esthetician will pass a hand piece over the area being treated. This hand piece blasts out the crystals that exfoliate the skin and then the vacuum system draws the crystals along with the dead skin cells back into the machine to be disposed of. After each area that is being treated has had 2 passes with the hand piece, the esthetician will apply our advanced serums to the skin. These serums are selected based on your skin concerns and are always followed by a high SPF sunscreen. If you have any allergies or product preferences it is important to let your esthetician know prior to treatment.
What can I expect following my treatment?
After a microdermabrasion your skin may feel a bit tacky and look a little pink. The tacky feeling should be completely gone after you complete your nightly skincare routine and the pinkness should diffuse within 24 hours of treatment. We recommend avoiding hot or steamy activities such as hot tubbing or going into a steam room after a microdermabrasion as the area can be sensitive. We also recommend to avoid working out or other activities that might make you sweat after your treatment. Some clients experience dryness on the treated area for a few days after treatment. This can be resolved by using a moisturizer that is meant for your skin type, and any of our staff can help you choose an appropriate product.
Can a microdermabrasion with dermal infusion be used in combination with other treatments?
Absolutely, and our skincare experts recommend combining our rejuvenation treatments with science-based products for even better results. Because or microdermabrasion is so exfoliating, it is an incredible option to combine with other treatments. Our clinic offers certain facial treatments in conjunction with microdermabrasion, including the Ageless illumination Facial that combined Intense Pulse Light (IPL) with microdermabrasion, as well as our Fresh & Firm facial, that combines our FORMA Skin Tightening Technology with microdermabrasion. Certain treatments may be too aggressive to combine with a microdermabrasion; if you are thinking of combining a treatment with a microdermabrasion, it is best to talk to one our experienced estheticians first to ensure you will get optimal results from your treatment.
